The hotel
The Queen of Collins Avenue, restaged.
The Saxony went up on Collins Avenue in 1947, and in the 1950s and 1960s people called it the Queen of Collins Avenue; Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Marilyn Monroe all performed there. The Argentine developer Alan Faena and his partner Len Blavatnik took it on, and it reopened as Faena Hotel Miami Beach in 2015, the first piece of an eight-block Faena District.
Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin worked on the interiors with Faena. In the main hall, called The Cathedral, gold-leafed columns salvaged from the Saxony stand on a mosaic floor of 632,000 tiles, under murals by Juan Gatti. At the far end, on the terrace, a woolly mammoth skeleton by Damien Hirst stands in 24-carat gold. Across the road, Rem Koolhaas's firm OMA designed the Faena Forum.
- Tierra Santa Healing House A spa of 22,000 square feet built on South American traditions, with a hammam, an ice room and a herbal steam room, opening straight onto the pool and the beach.
- Faena Theater Live cabaret and a jazz series inside the hotel, with live music most nights in The Living Room and late sets at the Saxony Bar from Thursday to Saturday.
- Faena Playa The beach club on the sand below the hotel, with towels, sun cream and light plates brought to your lounger, and a palm-lined pool kept for hotel guests.
