The hotel
Ten years of restoration.
Karawan Riad was once the harem of a palace complex of riads built in the seventeenth century, in the Andalous quarter of the Fes medina, next to the El Amal cinema on the way to R'cif. Restoring it took more than a decade. Local craftsmen did the work, using the traditional skills of the city, and the house reopened as a hotel with a MICHELIN Key to its name.
The result is a small house of seven suites around a courtyard, each furnished with antiques, old textiles and art, and named after a wind: Chergui, Harmattan, Zephyr, Meltem. Off the courtyard is a hammam in the Ottoman manner. Upstairs, the roof terrace looks out over the medina, and there is one more suite up there. The kitchen cooks French-Fassi dishes, with a good deal of seafood.
- The kitchen A French-Fassi menu with a leaning towards seafood, served in the dining room, on the patio or on the roof.
- Leelah Spa & Hammam A traditional hammam and massages, in a room off the central courtyard.
- Afternoon tea Mariage Frères teas and pastries in the tea rooms.
