The hotel

A coaching inn with its yard intact.

Horses and carriages once pulled in off Monmouth Place. The Georgian front still faces the street, and behind it the old yard survives, along with the lamp-lit lounges around it; both are Grade II listed. The building went through a full conversion into a small hotel, and the MICHELIN Guide notes that it is smaller and more intimate than many of the hotels in the centre of Bath.

The rooms run over four floors and keep their antique details. Fabrics and wallcoverings come from Lewis & Wood, a Gloucestershire firm, lamps from Pooky, and a Bath upholsterer worked on the furniture. No two rooms are decorated alike. One has its own rooftop terrace and a couple have freestanding baths. Breakfast is the only full meal served; for dinner, Bath's restaurants are a short walk away.

  • The courtyard An all-day café in the listed yard, which turns into a bar in the evening and is open to visitors as well as guests.
  • Roof terraces The larger king rooms come with slipper baths, and some have a private terrace on the roof.
  • Local hands Gloucestershire fabrics, a Bath upholsterer and restored Georgian detail in every room.
