The hotel

Priory land on the west side.

The house went up in 1835 as a private home, on ground that had once belonged to the Priory of Bath Abbey, and its builders gave it a few gothic touches. In the 1960s it served as a dormitory wing for The Park School. It opened as a hotel of just seven bedrooms in 1969 and ran that way for some twenty-five years.

In September 1994 it became the first hotel bought by Andrew and Christina Brownsword, who still own it. Today two joined houses hold 33 rooms and suites. Four acres of lawns, meadow and kitchen garden lie behind, looked after by Jane Moore, a silver medallist at the Chelsea Flower Show. The Garden Spa is the only L'Occitane spa in Britain, and the centre of Bath is about a mile away.

  • The Garden Spa Britain's only L'Occitane spa, with a sauna, a hammam and a heated indoor pool.
  • Four acres Formal gardens, terraces, meadows and a kitchen garden, with a heated outdoor pool among the lawns.
  • Into town A short walk through Royal Victoria Park reaches the Georgian centre, about a mile away.
