The hotel
A small dzong in the pines.
Aman arrived in Bhutan in 2004, the first international hotel group in the kingdom, and spread Amankora across five lodges in the western and central valleys. Kerry Hill designed them, mixing the old dzong style with plain contemporary rooms. The MICHELIN Guide treats Amankora as one hotel, counting 76 rooms across the lodges, and gives it two Keys.
The Thimphu lodge stands in pine forest on a ridge in the upper valley, a short drive from the centre of the capital. Its tall buildings of stone and whitewash follow the lines of a dzong and are entered through an enclosed arrival court. Inside there is teak panelling and little else: sixteen suites in two blocks, a library, a gallery and a spa with three treatment rooms.
- Forest and Stream Dinner A private chef cooks over an open fire beside a stream in the pines, a clay-pot dinner or a Bhutanese take on shabu shabu.
- Walks from the door An hour through the forest to Wangditse Monastery, looking down on Tashichho Dzong, or a longer hike to the twelfth-century temple at Dodedrak, with lunch among the monks.
- Into town A tour of the Centenary Farmers Market, nearly four hundred stalls of honey, dried cheese and chillies, and breakfast at Buddha Point facing Buddha Dordenma, 52 metres of gilded bronze.
