The hotel

Two houses in the Crescent.

John Wood the Younger designed the Royal Crescent as a single Palladian sweep of thirty houses, 538 feet long, and the hotel dates the building to 1775. The Crescent stands within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bath. In 1950 a guesthouse opened at No. 16, and No. 15 joined it soon after; the interiors were restored in 1978, and the hotel later took in adjoining buildings.

Local rules forbid a sign on the facade, so a doorman marks the entrance. Inside, the design studio Woodhouse & Law mixed antiques with a lighter modern hand, and many rooms have four-poster beds and marble bathrooms. Film crews keep returning: Persuasion in 2007, The Duchess a year later, and more recently Bridgerton. During the Second World War the lawn in front was dug up to grow cabbages.

  • The garden Behind the Crescent lies an acre of secluded garden, where afternoon tea is served in fine weather.
  • Spa & Bath House A spa set back in the grounds, for adults and guests from sixteen, with set pool hours for children in the school holidays.
  • On foot to Bath Bath Spa station is about ten minutes away on foot, and the centre of the city is closer still.
