The hotel
Rebuilt twice, on the same stretch of sand.
Henry Flagler opened the Palm Beach Inn for the winter of 1895 to 1896 and renamed it The Breakers in 1901. Fire took the wooden hotel in June 1903, and its replacement burned in March 1925. The Flagler heirs then hired Schultze & Weaver, who modelled the new building on the Villa Medici in Rome and finished it in time to open on 29 December 1926.
The hotel joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Its grounds have grown to about 140 acres. Golf came early: the course beside the hotel was the first with eighteen holes in Florida, and a second one, Breakers West, lies about ten miles inland. Inside, rooms keep patterned wallpaper, dark wood and crown mouldings, with marble bathrooms and balconies on the ocean side.
- The Flagler Club A hotel within the hotel: 21 rooms and suites with a more private level of service.
- Beach club A Mediterranean-style club on the sand with pools, watersports and bungalows looked after by their own concierges.
- Golf, tennis and the spa Two 18-hole courses, a tennis complex and a spa of about 20,000 square feet, with a fitness floor that looks over the ocean.
