The hotel

The newest name of an old capital.

Torarica was the first capital of Suriname, a riverside settlement of Portuguese Jews from 1629 that Paramaribo had overtaken by 1665. The Torarica Group, founded in 1962, took the name for its hotels, and it now runs three of them in the city. Royal Torarica, built in 2007 and renovated in 2014, is the most modern of the three, and the group calls it its most stylish. Its sisters are Torarica Resort, also on the river, and Eco Torarica.

It stands on Kleine Waterstraat, on the bank of the Suriname River, about ten minutes from the Waterkant and the wooden houses of the old centre. The building has five floors, and a garden with a pool and gazebos. At the top sits the Penthouse, with 180 degrees of glass looking over the bars and terraces of the nightlife district. The Royal Ballroom takes up to 500 guests.

Flying to Paramaribo.

Johan Adolf Pengel International at Zanderij is about 45 kilometres south of the hotel, roughly an hour by car by our estimate. Private jets use the same airport, whose long runway takes any business jet; the small Zorg en Hoop strip in town serves only light aircraft and helicopters.
