The city

Swimming in the rock.

The track to Limu leaves the road at the northern end of Namukulu village and is marked. Niue Tourism grades it moderate to hard. The water at the end is very clear, with a wide variety of fish, caves to explore and picnic spots above.

The northern coast has more within a short drive. At the foot of Hikutavake Hill, Matapa Chasm was once kept for the bathing of Niue's kings; from the same access track a harder trek heads inland to the Talava Arches. July to October is the season for humpback whales and the least rainy part of the year.

  • Matapa Chasm A chasm with a high cliff face near Hikutavake, kept in the past for the kings of Niue and still a sheltered place to swim and snorkel.
  • Talava Arches Natural arches of rock, once a lookout for raiders, reached on a harder trek inland from the Matapa track.

Arriving

Fly to Hanan, drive up the coast.

Every arrival on Niue comes through Hanan International, just south of Alofi, about eleven kilometres from the pools as the crow flies. The runway, 2,335 metres of asphalt, was relaid and reopened in July 2024.

When to go

July to October.

The water in the pools comes straight from an ocean that stays between 25 and 28 °C, and the air is a few degrees warmer by day. Rain is heaviest from January to April. July has the lowest total, under 90 mm, and the months either side are not much wetter.
