The hotel

A town hotel in wine country.

The hotel stands on a corner of High Street, across from the lawns and trees of Seymour Square Gardens, a few minutes on foot from the centre of Blenheim. It went up in 1989 on three floors. Later a multimillion-dollar expansion took it from 45 rooms to 80 and made the restaurant and bar larger. Today it trades as Carnmore Chateau Marlborough, and light refurbishment is under way.

In 2017 Qualmark, New Zealand's official tourism grading, gave it five stars after an assessor's visit, together with a Gold award for sustainable business. Destination Marlborough describes it as the only five-star Qualmark hotel at the top of the South Island. Guests can hire bicycles at the hotel for the town and the vineyards around it, and the gym, the pool and Meraki Day Spa are all on site.

Flying to Marlborough.

Marlborough Airport at Woodbourne, served by Air New Zealand and Sounds Air, is about 8 kilometres away, roughly ten minutes by car. Private jets land at the same airport, which has no customs, so a flight from abroad first clears in at another New Zealand airport.
