The city
The cliff above Tumon.
Puntan Dos Amåntes, as the Chamorro name has it, is the headland that fills the view north from the beaches of Tumon. It belongs to the limestone plateau of northern Guam and drops about 113 metres to the sea. The Spanish called it Cabo de los Amantes, and since 1972 it has been a US National Natural Landmark.
The story behind the name is old: a French explorer, Louis de Freycinet, wrote down a version in 1819. Two lovers forbidden to marry tied their hair together and leapt from the cliff. In the version told today the girl is from Hagåtña, running from a marriage arranged with a Spanish captain. About half a million people a year visit the park, which has a gift shop, a restaurant and a place for weddings.
- The lookout The viewpoint on the cliff edge, looking down the length of Tumon Bay and out over the Philippine Sea.
- Tumon Bay Marine Preserve The protected reef below the cliff, which the tourism bureau ranks among Guam’s best snorkelling.
- Hagåtña The capital, a short drive south, where the cathedral-basilica stands on the site of the island’s first church.
