The hotel
On the bay of the first navigators.
Matavai Bay is where Europe first reached Tahiti. Samuel Wallis landed here on 17 June 1767. James Cook anchored in April 1769 and watched the transit of Venus from the point at the far end of the bay, still called Point Venus. In October 1788 William Bligh brought the Bounty in to collect breadfruit. The bay was also the cradle of the Tahitian royal family.
The hotel stands on Lafayette Beach in Arue, a strip of black volcanic sand, and Tahiti Tourisme counts it as the only resort on the east coast. It ran as the Radisson Plaza Resort from 2004 until December 2014, when the owner, the Barbion Group, took it back under the name Tahiti Pearl Beach Resort. The group also developed the Four Seasons Bora Bora.
