The hotel
From tax office to hotel.
Christian Brothers' College stood on this corner of St Georges Terrace from 1894. Perth City Council bought the land in 1961, the school came down, and in 1962 a sixteen-storey Brutalist block went up as offices for the Australian Taxation Office. In 1996 it was converted into the Duxton Hotel. The grand lobby opens on to the terrace, and the Lobby Bar looks out over the street.
The building sits where St Georges Terrace meets Adelaide Terrace and Victoria Avenue, about three hundred metres from the river. A second phase of renovation, due to finish in September 2024, reworked the Club Rooms, the Club Lounge and the Presidential Suite, which was enlarged and looks over the Swan River. The work also took in seven function rooms, with new furniture by Bethany James, who grew up in Cottesloe.
- Firewater Grille The hotel restaurant, with its own bar for a drink before dinner.
- The pool An outdoor pool open from 6 am to 9 pm, with a gym open round the clock and a sauna.
- Close to the river About three hundred metres from the Swan River, and some fifteen minutes on foot to Elizabeth Quay.
