The hotel
On the main street of the capital.
Hotel Hans Egede went up in 1987 on Aqqusinersuaq, the main street through central Nuuk. It takes its name from the missionary who founded the town in 1728, and with six floors it is the largest hotel in Greenland's capital. The same family has run it for two generations, and alongside travellers it hosts conferences, weddings and banquets for up to 300 diners.
Nuuk sits at the mouth of Godthåb Fjord, and the hotel makes the most of it. Sarfalik, on the fifth floor, looks across to Sermitsiaq, Store Malene and the fjord; the Skyline Bar sits on the top floor. From the restaurants, the hotel says, you can watch for whales in the fjord in summer and the northern lights over it in winter.
- Sarfalik Fish and seafood from Greenlandic waters in the evening, a lighter Scandinavian menu at lunch, all on the fifth floor with the mountains in view.
- Skyline Bar Cocktails at the top of the building, looking over the town and the fjords.
- Conference centre Four plenary rooms and nineteen meeting rooms, for up to 400 people, with fjord and mountain views.

Nuuk Airport is about four kilometres from the centre, roughly ten minutes by car by our estimate, and the hotel lists a shuttle. Since November 2024 its 2,200-metre runway takes jets direct from Copenhagen and, in season, from Newark; private flights need a handler and must clear customs on four hours' notice.
