The hotel

A railway castle on the cliff.

The Canadian Pacific Railway opened the hotel on 18 December 1893. William Van Horne, its general manager, oversaw the project, and the New York architect Bruce Price drew it in the château style, high on the bluff above the St. Lawrence. The Maxwell brothers enlarged it twice, and the central tower, finished in 1924, made it the tallest building in the city until 1930.

In 1943 and again in 1944 Churchill, Roosevelt and Mackenzie King met here for the Quebec Conferences. Canada named the hotel a National Historic Site in 1981. Ivanhoé Cambridge has owned it since 2011, with Fairmont running it, and it stands inside the walled old town that UNESCO lists as a World Heritage site. Its eighteen floors rise about eighty metres over the river.
