The hotel
Feathers, birds and a sanatorium.
The building on Market Street goes back to the 1600s and was once a sanatorium. Historic England lists it at Grade II as a hotel and two houses joined into one: limestone rubble fronts, one of them stuccoed, and a brick block from about 1770. Most of what you see dates from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
The hotelier Gordon Campbell Gray named it The Feathers in 1980, after his collection of preserved birds. Ede Holdings, a family firm from Oxfordshire, reopened it in October 2024 after a refurbishment by the studio AGC BTR, with a new restaurant, The Nest, and a bar, The Aviary.
- Blenheim Palace The hotel stands moments from the palace and its parkland, on the main street of Woodstock.
- Old rooms, new fittings Wood panelling, velvet chairs and brass in the bathrooms, with rooms tucked along winding corridors and under sloping ceilings.
- The Aviary The bar opens onto a courtyard, and pours local spirits, Cotswold gin among them.
