The hotel
Two thousand years under one roof.
The palace of the Marquis of Caro stands in the Seu-Xerea quarter, about two hundred metres from the cathedral. Restorers found layer upon layer of the city in it: a Roman mosaic from Valentia Edetanorum, the twelfth-century Arab wall that once closed the city, Gothic arches and nineteenth-century details. The MICHELIN Guide calls it the only hotel in Valencia declared a historic monument.
It opened as a hotel in 2012. The interior designer Francesc Rifé kept every find in view and dressed the rooms in monochrome, lit like a gallery. Rooms have medieval coffered ceilings and Moorish arches. The hotel has since taken in a second building, the House of the Masters of the Temple, and a spa on the remains of an Islamic house.
- Xanglot The restaurant shares its room with the Arab wall. Its cooking draws on the Roman, Arab and Christian layers of the city.
- Casa del Agua A spa built over a small Islamic house with its garden and fountain: hammam, sauna, a cold bath and a heated, lightly salted pool. Open Tuesday to Saturday, booked ahead.
- Terraces and a library Several outdoor terraces, one with a plunge pool, and a library for the evening.
