The hotel
A Gehry building among the vines.
Marqués de Riscal has made wine in Elciego since 1858, and its stone cellars still stand at the heart of the estate. The company first asked Frank Gehry for a headquarters. What he drew was judged too striking to keep for staff, so it opened to guests in October 2006. It remains the only hotel Gehry has built, and the restaurant inside opened the same year, with Francis Paniego of Ezcaray in charge of the kitchen.
The building is clad in titanium and stands beside the old winery buildings of the nineteenth century. Its rooms follow its irregular lines, with large windows angled outward over the vineyards of Rioja Alavesa. A second wing, more classic in layout, holds the rest of the rooms and looks back at Gehry's building. The estate also has a Caudalie spa, with an indoor pool and about 1,400 square metres of treatment rooms.
