The hotel

A sanatorium turned beach hotel.

The building went up between 1977 and 1981 as the Sanatorium Rīga, at a time when Jūrmala was one of the favourite resorts of the Soviet Union and a place for health cures by the sea. The architects N. Pavārs, V. Valgums and M. Ģelzis gave it the clean modernist lines of the period, seven storeys facing the Gulf of Riga.

It was rebuilt from top to bottom in 2004 and now calls itself a five-star superior hotel, with 165 rooms over seven floors. The spa remains the heart of it: a sea-water pool, a Russian banja, a hammam and some four hundred treatments. A beach club sits on the sand in front, and the beach bar lies along the shore at Majori.
