The hotel

An English family's house by the sea.

Robert Trewhella, an English civil engineer, built the villa in 1919 as a summer house for his family, right on the shore of Mazzarò Bay. The Trewhellas came from Cornwall. In the 1950s his son Alfred turned it into a hotel. Orient-Express Hotels bought it in 2010, and the company, renamed Belmond, still runs it alongside the Grand Hotel Timeo up in town.

The house sits in a sub-tropical garden that runs down to its own pebble beach. Inside, the lobby, bar and restaurant are painted in greens and blues, with pictures by the local artist Alessandro Florio drawn from the old Sicilian painted carts. Most rooms face the beach and the bay, many with balconies full of flowers. The centre of Taormina is a short shuttle or cable car ride above.

  • The beach club Lido Villeggiatura on Mazzarò Bay, kept for hotel guests, with loungers on the pebbles and boat trips along the coast.
  • Brizza Dinner with your feet in the water, at tables set on the shore. The hotel advises booking ahead.
  • Up to town A free shuttle runs to the Grand Hotel Timeo, and the cable car to Taormina leaves close by.
