The hotel

A home for nurses.

Princess Helena, a daughter of Queen Victoria and president of the Royal British Nurses' Association, laid the foundation stone in 1900. The building housed trainee nurses from the Royal City of Dublin Hospital on Baggot Street. Its architect, Albert Edward Murray, faced it in Ruabon brick and buff terracotta from Wales, a mix that became known as Murray's Mellow Mixture. Master craftsmen carried out much of the ornament on the front.

Dylan opened here in 2006 as one of Dublin's first boutique hotels. In 2019 it grew from 42 bedrooms to 72. The interiors, redesigned by Grainne Weber Architects, use Italian marble, parquet and furniture made by a local craftsman. The Eddison restaurant now sits on a newly refurbished ground floor, opening onto two terraces, and the Nurserie keeps tree ferns and Victorian plants under a partly covered roof.

  • The Nurserie A partly covered terrace planted with tree ferns and Victorian plants; in fine weather, champagne is served out here.
  • The Ruby Room A small cocktail bar, with Dylan Bar alongside for a drink on the terrace.
  • Irish art Every bedroom is designed differently and hung with work by Irish artists.
