The hotel

The house by the red gate.

Locals call the Gate of St John the red gate, and this is the first house inside it. A knight in charge of the troops at the gate lived here. After the city fell in 1522 an Ottoman agha rebuilt it, and Turkish, then Greek and Jewish families followed. The chapel of Agios Ioannis has occupied the ground floor since 1475. Eventually the house stood empty.

Nikos Voulgaridis and Angela Hagidimitriou found it in April 2013. They dropped their architect, redesigned the house themselves and worked on the building site for a year, opening in March 2014 with five suites. A sixth came later. The suites carry the names of people who once lived here.

  • Breakfast in the courtyard Made by hand and served among orange and olive trees when the weather allows. The MICHELIN inspectors single it out.
  • Hosts who know the island The owners run the house themselves and give guests their own tips for Rhodes.
  • Inside the walls The medieval city starts at the front door, with the castle walls and the Church of St John opposite.

Rooms & suites

Six suites, each named after a former resident.

The suites are spread over two floors, each one different, with medieval walls and modern bathrooms.

  • With a balcony Deniz Suite A covered wooden balcony, the hayat, looks over the castle walls and the Church of St John.
  • With a garden Michalis Suite The newest suite, in a ground-floor room built around 1350, with a private garden, an olive tree and an outdoor soaking tub.
