The city

The island where everyone lands.

Vágar is the third largest of the eighteen Faroe Islands, and the British built its airport during the Second World War. It is still the only international airport in the country. A 5 km tunnel under the sound joins the island to Streymoy and the road to Tórshavn.

Most of the island's life is in three villages: Sørvágur at the head of its fjord, and the twins Miðvágur and Sandavágur. From Sørvágur you look out at Tindhólmur, an islet whose five peaks rise sheer to 262 m. Beyond Bøur the road tunnels through to Gásadalur, cut off by mountains until 2004, and boats leave the harbour for Mykines in summer.

  • Sørvágsvatn The largest lake in the Faroes, 3.4 km² of water that from one angle appears to hang above the ocean.
  • Bøsdalafossur A 30-metre fall where the lake spills into the Atlantic, an easy hike of about an hour from Miðvágur.
  • Gásadalur A village under the island's highest mountain, where Múlafossur drops off the cliff into the sea.

When to go

May to September.

The sea sets the temperature: highs stay near 5 °C through the winter months and reach 12 °C in July and August. May and June bring the least rain. Late summer turns wetter, and October is the rainiest month of the year.
