The hotel
The Asparagus Castle on the bastion.
In 1802 Count Franz Koháry bought houses on the Braunbastei, part of the walls that then ringed Vienna. A Koháry marriage into the House of Saxe-Coburg brought the site to that family, and between 1840 and 1845 Prince Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg built a palace on the bastion. Its row of slim columns earned it a nickname among the Viennese: the Spargelburg, the Asparagus Castle.
The palace stands on the remains of those fortifications, which Vienna later cleared to lay out the Ringstrasse. The building became a hotel in 2003, with the State Rooms kept for dining and events. Each of the 36 suites carries the name of a member of the Coburg family, in a Royal, Classic or Modern style. The palace belongs to The Leading Hotels of the World.
- The cellars Six vaulted cellars hold more than 60,000 bottles. Tours can be booked, and a wine bar pours from the collection.
