The hotel

Messel's first job on Mustique.

The main house was built in the eighteenth century as a warehouse for cotton, with a sugar mill beside it, and it is the oldest building on the island. Soon after Colin Tennant bought Mustique, he had it turned into a place to stay. The British designer Oliver Messel took the job with Arne Hasselqvist, the island's architect; it was their first work together here.

Messel's Great Room survives, with wood panelling, a vaulted ceiling and an oval art deco bar. The pool bar now sits in the island's original sugar mill. Around them, cottages and suites spread across thirteen acres of hillside garden, with the Caribbean at Endeavour Bay on one side of the estate and the Atlantic on the other. It remains the only full-service hotel on Mustique.

  • The Great Room Afternoon tea, rum from one of the widest lists in the Caribbean, a grand piano and champagne on Tuesday evenings.
  • Endeavour Bay The Beach Cafe for lunch, and a watersports centre for snorkelling, kayaks, paddleboards, diving and swimming with turtles.
  • The spa Four treatment rooms looking out to sea, with a gym and tennis courts on the estate.

Getting there

Flying to Mustique.

Mustique's airstrip takes propeller aircraft only, so every journey changes planes at a gateway: Air Adelphi flies Twin Otters from St Lucia and Barbados in about 50 minutes and from St Vincent in about 10. Private jets land at a gateway, and a chartered Twin Otter covers the last leg. From the airstrip, the drive to the hotel takes a few minutes by our estimate.
