The hotel
The Riviera, moved to Saint-Jean.
Tropical was the second hotel ever to open on St Barth, on the slope above the bay of Saint-Jean, a short walk down to the beach. It is a small place: twenty-four rooms on two floors, linked by verandas around a central patio and a garden thick with plants. The idea is the French Riviera in the Caribbean, closer to Saint-Tropez than to Cannes, and the hotel belongs to the small 369° Hôtels & Maisons collection.
The renovation, shown in December 2022, was the work of the designer Oscar Lucien Ono of Maison Numéro 20 and the architects Bruneau Ghezzi. They looked to the 1930s and 1940s: Art Deco lines, striped fabrics by Manuel Canovas and Pierre Frey, fluted wood in the bathrooms and glazed ceramic fish on the walls. Raphaël Schmitt painted a mural of plants that runs from inside to out.
- The pool A pool on the hill with a view over the whole bay of Saint-Jean.
- On the water Boat trips, jet skis, kayaks and paddleboards arranged by the hotel, and yoga sessions.
- Holidermie A wellness space run with the French brand, for massages and facials by appointment.

Getting there
Flying to Gustavia.
Long-haul flights land on St Maarten, and Winair or St Barth Commuter covers the last stretch in about a quarter of an hour. The airstrip is on the same bay, a few minutes from the hotel by car, our estimate. Private jets land at Princess Juliana on St Maarten, where a propeller aircraft or a helicopter can wait for the hop across.
