The hotel

Built around the trees.

One&Only Mandarina opened on 1 November 2020 on about eighty acres between the Sierra de Vallejo rainforest reserve and the Pacific. The Tucson practice Rick Joy Architects laid it out around old trees and pre-Hispanic finds on the site, working with local builders and craftspeople. Two beaches lie below the cliffs, one of them a mile of sand at the Canalan Beach Club.

Treehouses stand twelve metres off the ground, walled, floored and ceiled in Cumaru wood. The villas below have earthen walls and funnel-shaped tiled roofs, a reference to buildings the Cora people once raised here. Inside are woven settees, rocking chairs in parota and teak, and textiles from Oaxaca. Each of the 105 keys stands alone, with its own plunge pool.

  • Polo and horses The Mandarina Polo & Equestrian Club, conceived by Alejandro Battro, gives lessons, polo classes and trail rides from the jungle to the sea.
  • Whales offshore Whale season runs from December to March, with boat trips out from the coast.
  • The spa Six treatment rooms in a volcanic rock garden, with rituals drawn from Indigenous and pre-Hispanic traditions, some led by curanderas.

Rooms & suites

  • Private home Villa One About 1,747 square metres and three bedrooms, the resort's most private address.
