The hotel

Built into the rock.

Chris Blackwell, the founder of Island Records, bought this stretch of cliff and built the hotel with Bertram Saulter and his wife, the interior designer Greer-Ann Saulter. It opened in 1997 as part of Blackwell's Island Outpost group. Saulter built straight into and on top of the rock, and the staff like to say the blueprints came after.

The ground is about ten acres of limestone, holed with caves and grottos that open on to the sea. Some are for swimming and snorkelling, others hold dinner tables lit by candles. When Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica in October 2025, the hotel came through with little damage and kept its doors open.

Getting there

Flying to Negril.

Sangster International at Montego Bay is the airport for scheduled flights and for private jets, and the coast road to the West End takes about an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half. Kingston's Norman Manley International is about four hours away by road.

Business & First Class Scheduled flights Montego Bay's single runway runs to some 8,700 feet, and passengers clear immigration on arrival there. December to April is its busy season, with the heaviest weeks around Christmas, New Year and spring break. Request a fare Private Jet Private aviation Business aircraft are handled by Signature or IAM Jet Centre on a general-aviation apron of their own, with slots needed at certain peak times.
