The hotel

Sixteen, in Roman numerals.

The XVI stands for the sixteenth century, when Santo Domingo was founded; Dominicans read it as dieciséis. The city is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas, and its Ciudad Colonial is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Casas del XVI opened here in 2014, after a first restoration that cost about seventeen million dollars. The old streets around it hold the first cathedral of the Americas and the Ozama Fortress.

There are now eight houses, built between the sixteenth and the early twentieth centuries. Casa de los Mapas keeps old maps and a palm courtyard around its pool. Casa del Diseñador leans on art and fashion, Casa Macorís on Dominican folklore. In September 2026 the hotel joined IHG's Vignette Collection under its own name. The Alcázar de Colón and Parque Colón are a short walk away.

  • A house to yourselves Rooms can be booked one by one, or a whole house taken for a family or a group.
  • Courtyards and pools Most houses have their own pool. At Casa de los Mapas the water glows turquoise at night under tall palms, and butlers bring mojitos or mamajuana.
  • The old city on foot Free bicycles, architecture and museum tours, chocolate workshops and cigar visits start from the door.
