The hotel

From fort to hotel.

The French put a wooden fort here in 1720. The British took Dominica in 1761 and began a stone fort nine years later, named after William Young, the island's first British governor. In the late nineteenth century it held the headquarters of the island's police, and in 1964 it became a hotel. Its walls still form part of the building, and cannons stand in the foyer and courtyard.

Hurricane David in 1979 destroyed much of what remained of the fort. A renovation of about 18 million US dollars, finished in November 2023, added sixty Fort Collection rooms to forty refurbished oceanfront rooms and suites. The Marquis Bar now fills the old troops' barracks, and the Zemi Spa opens onto the sea. The hotel now runs its own dive operation, and in 2023 it held Green Globe certification, only the second property in Dominica to do so.

  • Diving from the jetty The hotel runs its own dive centre with two boats, and guests can shore dive from the only jetty on the island.
  • Zemi Spa A day spa on the water, with massages using volcanic rock and local products.
  • The pool An infinity pool over the Caribbean, with a waterfall, a hot tub and a pool bar.
