The city

Mogotes and tobacco.

Viñales lies in the Sierra de los Órganos, at the western end of Cuba. The valley floor is farmland, and out of it stand the mogotes: steep, rounded outcrops of limestone up to 300 metres high. Tobacco is grown here much as it was centuries ago: animals pull the ploughs, because machines bruise the leaf. UNESCO listed the valley in 1999 for its farms, its village and the music and crafts that go with them.

Come between November and April, the drier months, when afternoons run from 26 to 30 °C. From May the rain arrives in earnest, passing 250 mm in June. Cuba is short of fuel and power in 2026, so check that your hotel and driver are confirmed before you fly, and US citizens should check their licence category first.

Arriving

Land in Havana, drive west.

There is no international airport in the valley. Visitors land at José Martí International in Havana, some 140 kilometres to the east in a straight line, and continue by road.

When to go

November to April.

The dry months, November to April, bring 50 to 82 mm of rain a month and afternoons of 26 to 30 °C. From May to October the valley is hotter and far wetter, with more than 180 mm in most months.
