The hotel
A monastery for guests.
Yen Tu is where King Tran Nhan Tong retired in the thirteenth century to found the Truc Lam school of Zen, and pilgrims still climb its slopes, about 1,068 metres high, to the pagodas and the Golden Buddha near the top. Legacy Yen Tu opened at the foot of the mountain in 2018, in Uong Bi, well inland from the bay, as a base for the climb and for the temples on the way up.
Its buildings follow the Tran dynasty, laid out like a palace and a monastery, and the design is credited to Bill Bensley. Inside there are ceramics and woven textiles, dark wood and copper lamps. There are no televisions. Many rooms have a balcony and large windows onto the forest, and each has a wooden slab and ink for calligraphy, and an outdoor patio.
- The mountain at the gate The Yen Tu cable car, trails and pagodas start close by, and guests can go up early, ahead of the day trips.
- Zen practice Tue Tinh Am Wellness runs yoga, meditation and singing bowl sessions in the tradition of Truc Lam Zen.
- Nuong Village A traditional village on the grounds, with shows for guests.
