The hotel
A state guesthouse at the head of the gorge.
The hotel began in 1961 as Tian Hsyang Lodge, a guesthouse where Chiang Kai-shek and visiting heads of government stayed when they came to see the gorge. In 1991 the Regent group took it over as Grand Formosa Taroko. Silks later rebuilt it, and the designers Nancy Hu and Irving Huang dressed the rooms in wood, stone and marble, with tall windows onto the cliffs.
The earthquake of 3 April 2024 closed the hotel and much of the park; for a time it served as a shelter and command post. It reopened in October 2024, closed again after Typhoon Kong-rey, and has been open since 16 January 2025. The road through the gorge now runs in timed slots, and the hotel sends a free shuttle from Hualien Station.
- On the roof An outdoor pool with three hot tubs kept at 38 °C, open-air films at night and the gorge all around.
- Walks from the door Guided Tianxiang walks and visits to Xibao, Taiwan's first public forest school, high on the mountain.
- Evenings Millet-wine cocktails and Indigenous music and dance around the fire pit.
