The hotel

A 1970s ship on the beach.

The resort first went up in the 1970s, designed to look like a great sailing vessel moored on the sand. Cinnamon Hotels later reworked it, and it reopened as Trinco Blu on 15 May 2010. The new look is retro: bleached wooden decks, cut cement floors, rattan furniture and denim trims, with orange set against blue and white. The 81 rooms divide into 36 beach chalets, 43 superior rooms and two suites.

It stands at the end of Uppuveli beach, between Trincomalee and Nilaveli, with the sea in front and thick greenery behind. Pigeon Island lies further up the coast. A dive centre works from the hotel's beach, and The Crab serves seafood on the sand. The dry months here run from May to September, with highs of 33 to 35 °C and the sea at about 29 °C.

  • Into the water A diving and water sports centre works from the hotel's beach, and the excursion desk arranges trips along the coast.
  • Pool by the sea A large freshwater pool in the gardens, with loungers and hammocks a few steps from the sand.
  • The Crab A seafood restaurant set out on the beach itself.

Cinnamon Air flies from there to China Bay, Trincomalee's airfield, in about three-quarters of an hour; the hotel is about half an hour on by car, our estimate. By road from Colombo the trip takes some seven hours.
