The hotel

From officers' retreat to riverside hotel.

In the 1960s and 1970s this riverside resort in the hills north of Ulaanbaatar was kept for senior officers of the Soviet army. It was abandoned in the 1980s and fell apart in the years after Mongolia left the Soviet bloc. A Lenin statue still stands over the terrace, and cabinets inside hold relics of that time. Today it is a two-storey complex of several wings with 52 rooms.

The restoration took more than four years and gave the hotel a whole wing for the Tereljmaa Spa, reported in 2008 as the first spa in Mongolia. The park around it borders the Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area, with pine-covered mountains and meadows of wild flowers. When Hillary Clinton came to Mongolia, her staff chose to stay here. Local horsemen still wait at the door to take guests riding.

  • Tereljmaa Spa A wing of its own on two floors over the river, with six treatment rooms, two of them for couples, saunas and a steam room.
  • Heated pool A large indoor pool between columns, warm whatever the weather outside.
  • On horseback Local horsemen wait at the front of the hotel to take guests riding into the park.
