The hotel
A ryokan on an imperial estate.
The land at Takanawa once belonged to the imperial family, and traces of the old imperial residences still stand in the grounds. So does the Kihinkan, a European-style guest house built in 1911 and now kept for private events. Around them lies a Japanese garden of about 20,000 square metres, with more than two hundred cherry trees that flower in spring.
Hanakohro sits within Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa, run as a small ryokan of its own by Prince Hotels. There are sixteen suites, each named after a plant from the garden, with tatami, low beds, tea sets and ikebana. Staff in kimono talk guests through the art and customs of the house, and Forbes has given it five stars six years in a row.
- OH-SAI Lounge For Hanakohro guests only: Japanese breakfast, cocktails and lessons in origami, furoshiki and tea, plus sake tastings.
- SPA TAYUTA Booked for one guest or party at a time, with treatments built on yuzu, cedar and chamomile.
- The garden More than two hundred cherry trees, a bridge over the water, and lights along the paths after dark.
