The hotel
From Paris to Karoso beach.
Fabrice and Evguenia Ivara came from Paris and had never run a hotel. They settled on Sumba and built Cap Karoso on the beach that gives it its name, on the island's west coast. It opened in 2023 and joined Design Hotels. The architect Gary Fell drew the plan, setting modern blocks among pavilions in the local manner, and the Jakarta studio Bitte did the interiors.
Behind the resort lies a farm of three hectares, set up by the agriculturalist Philippe Guiglionda and farmed organically. It grows almost all the fruit and vegetables the kitchens use. Solar panels on site cover at least half the power. Beyond the beach are the Karoso lagoon for swimming and snorkelling, the Pero surf break and the salt lake of Weekuri. Ikat hangings by the Indonesian artist Alexander Sebastianus Hartanto line the walls.

Rooms run from studios and suites to villas with their own pools, the largest with three bedrooms. Headboards are hand-carved and ikat hangs on the walls.

Getting there
Flying to Sumba.
Tambolaka airport is about fifty minutes away by car, or fifteen minutes by helicopter, with daily flights from Bali. Tambolaka is not a port of entry, so a private jet from abroad clears customs at another Indonesian airport first.
