The hotel

A royal house with thirteen rooms.

Rajmahal was built in 1729 as a retreat in the country outside the new city of Jaipur. The city has since grown all round it, and the walled old town is now less than fifteen minutes away. Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II and Maharani Gayatri Devi made it their home; she wrote of its charm and pleasantly informal air in her memoir, A Princess Remembers.

The royal family still owns it. Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh stayed here, and a suite was built for the state visit of 1961. Rooms carry the names of past guests, Jackie Kennedy and the Princess of Wales among them. The designer Adil Ahmad dressed the interiors in hand-painted wallpaper, pinks and greens, and velvet. Five acres of walled garden surround the house.

  • The gardens Five walled acres of lawns and fountains, with grass tennis courts, a croquet lawn and an Art Deco pool.
  • The Polo Lounge A bar known for its cocktails, named in honour of the Maharaja's game and Jaipur's polo.
  • The Thunderbird The Maharaja's 1950s Ford Thunderbird is parked under the portico.
