The hotel
Hotel and mall, built as one.
Abdul Razak Holdings began planning the complex in 1987 on a plot of twenty-four acres in Gadong, once a rubber estate on the edge of the capital. Building started in 1999 and took seven years, at a cost of about B$130 million for the hotel and the shopping centre together. Crown Prince Al-Muhtadee Billah opened the hotel on 9 July 2006, toured the presidential suite and signed the guestbook.
The Mall below is one of the larger shopping centres in Brunei, three storeys with a cinema, a supermarket and a food court, and Gadong around it is where the capital goes out to eat. Upstairs the hotel keeps to business: a ballroom that seats more than a thousand, meeting rooms, a coffee house open around the clock and an outdoor pool.
