The hotel

Next door to the palace.

Aman came to Bhutan in 2004 with five lodges strung across the centre and west of the country, from Paro to Bumthang. Bumthang is the only one in a village, at the edge of Jakar in the Choekhor valley. It is built like a modern dzong, with dry-stone walls, paved courtyards and whitewashed rammed earth, and it looks straight onto Wangdicholing Palace.

Bumthang means beautiful field, and the valley is known as the food basket of Bhutan. Twenty-nine temples and monasteries stand around it, Jambay Lhakhang and Kurjey among them. The archery ground of Jakar is a short walk away. Meals are taken by the fireplace or in a courtyard shaded by fruit trees, and guests can taste the valley's beer and cheese.

  • Jambay Lhakhang A fire blessing at Jambay Lhakhang, and a name-giving ceremony at Sey Lhakhang.
  • Lunch at Kurjey A meal set out near Kurjey temple and Zangthopelri.
  • Beer and cheese Tastings at Bhutan's first brewery and at a cheese dairy run on Swiss lines.
