The hotel
The oldest hotel in Yerevan.
Nikoghayos Buniatyan, then chief architect of Yerevan, designed the building, and it opened in 1928 with 78 rooms as the first hotel of Soviet Armenia. It was the Intourist hotel, then Hotel Yerevan. Charents lived here for about seven years, the film crew of Pepo stayed in 1935, and Sergei Parajanov worked on The Color of Pomegranates in his room. The register also holds the names of Jacques-Yves Cousteau and William Saroyan.
During the war of the early 1990s it sheltered refugees. The Italian company Renco bought it in 1998 and rebuilt it from 1999, recreating the façade plaster with help from a factory in Pesaro. It reopened under Golden Tulip, gained its fifth star in 2009 and joined Small Luxury Hotels of the World in 2017. The suites now carry the names of Aznavour, Charents, Kochar, Parajanov and Khachaturian.
