The hotel

A family house on the south-east shore.

White Sand began as a project of the Niznik family, who fell for the island and built a small resort on the beach at Paje, far from the lanes of Stone Town. The villas use coral stone walls, thatched roofs and the rounded forms of Swahili building. Most of the furniture was made by the resort's own craftsmen.

It joined Relais & Châteaux in 2017. Herbs come from the garden, fish from the boats offshore, and the villas run on solar power. Most of the staff live in the villages nearby. Soaps in the rooms are made from seaweed gathered along this coast.

Before you go.

  • Arrival Check-in from 2 pm, check-out by noon.
  • Children All ages are welcome, with a children's pool, a small playground, cots and babysitting. There is no lifeguard, and the balconies do not suit children under six.
  • Pets Not accepted.
  • Festive dates Gala dinners on 24, 25 and 31 December are compulsory and charged on top of the room.

Flying to Zanzibar.

Abeid Amani Karume International is about 40 kilometres away, just over an hour by car across the island. Private jets use the same airport, and the resort can arrange a private transfer on request.
