The hotel

The town's first grand hotel, rebuilt.

For years the Mount Meru was the best hotel in Arusha. It belonged to the state's Tanzania Tourist Corporation, lost its shine in the late 1970s and 1980s, and was refurbished under Novotel management later that decade. When the government sold out of the corporation, the hotel passed to new owners.

It closed in 2009 for a complete rebuild and reopened on 17 December 2010, with President Jakaya Kikwete cutting the ribbon. The new hotel has 178 rooms, four restaurants and a conference centre for three hundred, on 37 acres of gardens. In 2017 a national newspaper called it the only five-star hotel in Arusha.

Flying to Arusha.

Arusha airport, hub of the safari flights, is about 25 minutes away by car. Long-haul flights and private jets use Kilimanjaro International, about an hour east by road, our estimate.
