The hotel

Deer on the east coast.

The lodge stands on a former hunting estate of about 150 hectares in the hills behind Sainte-Anne, on the wet, green east side of Réunion. The last stretch of road climbs through sugar cane fields from Saint-Benoît. Deer and stags move freely across the grounds, and the estate keeps its own kitchen garden and bees. The Leading Hotels of the World places it inside the island's UNESCO-listed national park.

The buildings use stone, wood and leather, with the feel of a mountain chalet. Rooms look like small cottages, each with a patio or covered balcony and a 180-degree view down to the Indian Ocean. In the cool season a fire burns in the lounge and guests borrow books from the library. Below the lodge, a stone cellar holds the wine.

  • Forest spa A Cinq Mondes spa with a sauna, an open-air jacuzzi and a Balinese shower, looking into the trees.
  • On foot Two marked trails start on the estate. The Takamaka forests and the Salazie cirque are within reach for a day out.
  • Heated pool A heated outdoor pool looking out over the Indian Ocean.
