The hotel

Named for the rhinoceros.

Omaanda means rhinoceros in Oshiwambo. The Zannier family bought the old Ondekaremba cattle ranch in 2016 and turned it, with the N/a'an ku sê foundation of Rudie and Marlice van Vuuren, into a reserve where animals rescued at the foundation's sanctuary could be released. Angelina Jolie, who supports N/a'an ku sê, had pointed the group's founder to the land after a stay at its Phum Baitang in Cambodia.

The lodge opened in the summer of 2018 with ten huts, the group's first hotel in Namibia. They follow the Owambo homestead: round clay walls on sandbag frames, thatch finished by hand and a wooden kraal fence around a shared boma. Géraldine Dohogne did the interiors with antiques from Namibia and its neighbours. Sonop, a tented camp in the Namib Desert, is its sister.
