The hotel
Built to look like the wrecks.
Fog and heavy seas have stranded many ships on this coast, and the lodge takes its shape from them. The Namibian architect Nina Maritz drew each cabin as a fragment of a hull, clad in weathered timber and raised on a platform in the dunes. Inside there is raw plywood, big angled windows facing the desert and a wood-burning stove for cold mornings.
The lodge opened in June 2018 in the Skeleton Coast Central Concession, on the southern bank of the Hoarusib River mouth. It belongs to the Sesfontein Conservancy, run with Natural Selection, Journeys Namibia and Trip Travel. Solar panels power the rooms. Drives go north and south along the coast, to the seals at Möwe Bay and the clay castles of the Hoarusib.
- Möwe Bay and the wrecks A day out to the seal colony, passing the remains of the Suiderkus and the Karimona, an abandoned diamond mine and the wreck of a Ventura bomber.
- Roaring dunes A sundowner drive to dunes that hum when the sand slides, plus sandboarding and guided quad biking in the morning.
- The Hoarusib A full-day 4x4 drive up the river to the Clay Castles, with a beach lunch when the weather allows.
