The city
Four thousand years in one mound.
Qal’at al-Bahrain is a tell some twelve metres high and six hundred metres long, built up by settlement from about 2300 BC until the sixteenth century. It was the capital and harbour of Dilmun, a civilisation once known only from Sumerian tablets, and UNESCO inscribed it in 2005, adding the old sea channel and an offshore tower in 2008. Palm groves still frame it on the landward side.
The site lies five and a half kilometres west of Manama, so an afternoon here fits easily around the city. Come between October and April, when the days run from 20 to 34 °C, and stay on the shore path for the late light over the walls.
Arriving
Twelve kilometres from the runway.
Bahrain International, on Muharraq Island, is about twelve kilometres from the fort by the causeways and the coast road through Manama.
