The city

Salt, reef and a colonial capital.

Grand Turk covers under seven square miles, yet Cockburn Town, on its western shore, has been the capital of the Turks and Caicos since 1766. Red Salina, an old salt pond, borders the town; the National Museum on Front Street keeps the finds from the Molasses Reef Wreck; and offshore the sea floor drops away at the Wall, a dive site of turtles, sharks and rays.

This is not a resort island. The tourist board speaks of a few small inns and oceanfront houses to rent, and of no large hotels at all, so travellers who want a four- or five-star base usually stay on Providenciales, twenty minutes away by air, and come across for the day. In winter humpback whales pass close to the island.

JAGS McCartney International lies about two miles from Cockburn Town. It is an airport of entry, but there are no scheduled international flights: almost everything that lands here is an island hop.

When to go

December to October.

A dry island for most of the year: from January to August rain stays under 55 mm a month. Afternoons range from 27 °C in winter to 32 °C in summer; the water, from 25 to 29 °C. November is the wet month, and August to October carry the storm risk.
