The city
Where Cyprus begins.
Most visitors to Cyprus land at Larnaca and drive straight on, though the town is worth a stop. Behind Finikoudes, the beach and palm-lined promenade along the bay, the old quarter keeps the stone church of St Lazarus, begun in the ninth century, and a small medieval castle by the sea. Townhouses of the same streets have been joined into a hotel that keeps their arches and vaulted ceilings.
The summer is long and dry: from June to September there is almost no rain, July and August reach 33 °C, and the sea stays at 25 °C or more from July to October. Inland, the road climbs to Lefkara, the hill village known for its lace.
- Church of St Lazarus A stone church of the ninth century in the old quarter, a street behind the promenade.
- Larnaca Salt Lake A shallow lake beside the airport, with the mosque of Hala Sultan Tekke on its shore.
- Lefkara A village in the hills famous for its lace and its blue doors.
