The hotel
On the river since 1962.
The hotel was built in 1962, the year the Torarica Group was founded, and the group is now the largest hotel company in Suriname. Its name comes from Torarica, the first capital, a riverside settlement of Portuguese Jews from 1629 that Paramaribo had overtaken by 1665. The building was renovated in 2012. It has 130 rooms, from standard rooms to suites with a living room and kitchen, and the group's two other hotels, Royal Torarica and Eco Torarica, are in the same city.
It stands on the bank of the Suriname River at Rietbergplein, and the wooden streets of the old centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are within walking distance. Inside are a tropical garden and a round pool, with a shallow corner for children. De Pier, at the water's edge, looks out over the river, and the Pool Terrace serves lunch and dinner beside the pool.
